How We Fit In is a podcast project dedicated to sharing the stories of current and former Seventh-day Adventist church members all around the world. We want to explore how over 25 million unique individuals fit under one belief system. We all have stories to tell, and they deserve to be heard.
We’ll be publishing your stories in episodes on Apple Podcasts and Google Play Podcasts. Our format will be like that of The Moth. The stories can range from hilarious to serious to heartbreaking. Two stories we recommend for getting a feel for the format are "Pregnant Man" and "Small Wins or You Spin Me Right Round."
Our only requirements for your story are:
It must be true.
It must have stakes. (What is gained or lost? What is the urgency? What is the conflict? How did the trip from Point A to Point B shape you?)
It must be your story to tell. (Were you there? Are you one of the main characters? Your involvement in the events as they unfold is essential.)
What we don’twant: Stand-up routines. Repeat stories. Stereotypes. Rants. Essays. How-to’s. Confessions. Lectures. Fictions. Gratuitous anything.
What we do want: Hook us in. Make us care about you. Paint the scene. Clearly state your fears, desires, the dilemma. Make us invested in the outcome. Introduce the conflict. Make us worried for you. Impress us with observations that are uniquely yours. Rope us into the moment when it all goes down. Conclude as a different person: Triumphant? Defeated? Befuddled? Enlightened? CHANGED!
We will also note that since we are purposefully searching for people outside of the traditional church, we understand the risk you may be taking by essentially shouting a story from the rooftops. How We Fit In always respects any requests for anonymity or another person telling the story for you in certain circumstances.
Our mission is to provide a safe spiritual and social community to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex current and former Seventh-day Adventists, their families, and those who support them.
We are here to provide community and advocacy for LGBTIQ individuals with a Seventh-day Adventist connection, their families, and those who support them because of this important truth—everyone is created in the image of God.
