Kinship Kampmeeting 2020

yolanda elliott2014Just a few days ago, President Barack Obama proclaimed June 2016 as the United States’ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. In celebration of the great diversity of the LGBT community, there are Pride celebrations around the country and beyond!

Each June for more than a dozen years, my Kinship region, U.S. Region 2, has been marching in the Washington, D.C. Pride parade to let people in the community know that SDA Kinship exists and that we also know how to have a great time! Year after year, attendees along the parade route with a Seventh-day Adventist background have excitedly come up to us to introduce themselves, thankful that there is an organization for LGBT people with an Adventist background. It’s been particularly awesome to see these newcomers join Kinship and Region 2 themselves!

Since we first began marching in the parade, the organizers have changed the parade day from Sunday morning before the street festival to the preceding Saturday afternoon and evening. So we look at participating in the parade as our chance to “witness” like Adventists are prone to do, and we have really good news to share! J

I hope these pictures from our region will give you some incentive to work with your region’s coordinator on signing up for the Pride parade in your area. And if your region doesn’t have a coordinator at the moment, perhaps you can be the leader you wish your region had! There’s plenty of fun to go around!

Speaking of fun, Kinship Kampmeeting is coming up in just a few short weeks. This July 26-30, Kampmeeting is being held very close to Baltimore-Washington International airport at the Conference Center at the Maritime Institute. We’ve booked a lot of interesting speakers and presenters and also scheduled fun social times for the evenings. Not only will you enjoy great sessions from presenters, but our Kampmeeting Coordinator has made sure there are plenty of times where we can make a lot of great memories and new friends and enjoy our long-time friendships as well. If you’ve never experienced Kinship Kampmeeting, suffice it to say you’ve never truly experienced what camp meeting should be like. And that’s why once you’ve experienced Kinship Kampmeeting, the usual camp meetings just never quite measure up!

This is Pride month and I am proud to be a part of the larger LGBT community, but I’m even more proud to be a part of the SDA Kinship International community. I long for the day when there is no further need for organizations such as Kinship because we’re all considered as equal in the sight of our fellow man as I know we are in the sight of God. Until that day arrives, we have this big, wonderful, diverse family, and I’m not just proud to be a part of it during June, but I’m glad it’s here for us all twelve months of the year.

If SDA Kinship has been helpful to you in your journey, consider giving back! Talk to our development director Yeshara (email) or our volunteer coordinator Naveen (email) for more information on how.

I hope to see you at Kampmeeting outside of Baltimore, Maryland this July. Please go to the website now and register (http://www.sdakinship.org/events/sda-kinship-kampmeeting.html), if you’ve not already done so. Kampmeeting is best when you’re there!
